This lakeside 9-cabin amenity village in Mount Holly, NC, was recognized by the Greater Charlotte Homebuilders Association with a 2021 MAME Award for “Best Community Amenity”.
A truly unique project, the land the complex was developed on a boot-shaped peninsula known as "Little Italy", owned for years by Regine and Andreas Bechtler, founder of Charlotte’s Bechtler Museum of Modern Art. Originally considered as a possible location for his museum, Bechtler purchased the 300-acre tract in 1997, and shared the site as an informal artist colony—large, rustic cabin studios where artists, invited by Bechtler, worked in a peaceful, idyllic setting.
Located on beautiful Mountain Island Lake, the project consists of nine existing buildings, each cabin given a design theme to provide a variety of activities and promote interaction among the community’s 55+ active adult residents. Dedicated activity cabins are well appointed for for ceramics, painting, sewing, fitness, celebrations, and a community library. We removed the upper floors of most of the buildings to expose vaulted, tongue-and-groove ceilings and original, solid wood beams.
The project, developed by Lennar Homes, also includes swimming pools, tennis and pickleball courts, and lakefront rocking chair porches.
